3 Signs Testosterone May Be Low After Age 35

As a nurse practitioner, one thing I hear often from men over 35 is this: I know something feels different, but I cannot explain it.

Sometimes it starts with lower energy. Sometimes it is changes in body composition, motivation, sleep, or mental clarity. Many men assume it is simply stress, getting older, or having too much on their plate, but in many cases, low testosterone may be part of the picture.

Testosterone naturally declines with age, but when levels drop more than they should, it can begin affecting daily life in ways that are easy to overlook at first.

One of the most common things I hear is, I sleep, but I still wake up tired.

2. Your body is changing even when your habits have not

Testosterone plays an important role in maintaining lean muscle mass, recovery, and metabolism.

I often see men who are still exercising or trying to stay active, but they notice more abdominal weight gain, less muscle tone, or that their body is no longer responding the way it used to.

Many tell me their body feels different than it did even just a few years ago.

3. Your focus, mood, or motivation feels off

Low testosterone is not only physical. It can also affect how you think and feel.

Some men notice brain fog, lower confidence, irritability, reduced sex drive, or a loss of motivation that is difficult to explain. They are functioning through life, but they do not feel mentally sharp, driven, or fully present.

What I always tell patients is that symptoms deserve context. Sometimes testosterone is part of the answer, but sleep quality, stress, thyroid function, metabolic health, and inflammation also matter.
